Overview: Split's Mediterranean Climate
Split enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The swimming season runs from late May through October, with sea temperatures peaking in August at around 25°C (77°F).
Spring (April-May)
Weather:
Pleasant temperatures (15-23°C), occasional rain, sea starting to warm up.
Why Visit:
- Fewer tourists than summer
- Lower prices on accommodation and tours
- Perfect for sightseeing without the heat
- Wildflowers bloom on the islands
Considerations:
Sea may be too cool for swimming in April. Some island restaurants and beach bars may not be open yet.
Summer (June-August)
Weather:
Hot and sunny (25-33°C), very little rain, warm sea (22-25°C).
Why Visit:
- Perfect beach weather
- All attractions and restaurants open
- Vibrant nightlife and events
- Best conditions for boat trips
Considerations:
Peak tourist season means crowds and higher prices. Book accommodations and tours well in advance.
Early Autumn (September-October)
Weather:
Still warm (20-27°C), sea remains swimmable (20-24°C), more chance of rain by October.
Why Visit:
- Our favorite time to visit!
- Warm enough for swimming with fewer crowds
- Lower prices returning
- Wine harvest season - great for food and wine lovers
- Beautiful light for photography
Late Autumn & Winter (November-March)
Weather:
Cool to mild (8-15°C), more frequent rain, some days still sunny.
Why Visit:
- Experience Split like a local with very few tourists
- Lowest accommodation prices
- Christmas markets in December
- Great for cultural exploration
Considerations:
Many island attractions closed, limited boat tours available, too cold for swimming.
Our Recommendation
For the best combination of good weather, warm sea, and manageable crowds, we recommend late May to mid-June or September. You'll enjoy excellent conditions without the peak summer prices and crowds.
