Where Fantasy Became Reality
Croatia's dramatic coastline provided the perfect backdrop for the world of Westeros. From the streets of King's Landing to the slave pits of Meereen, the Dalmatian coast is steeped in Game of Thrones history. Many locations are easily accessible from Split, either on foot or by boat.
Filming Locations Near Split
Diocletian's Palace Basements
The underground cellars of Split's ancient palace served as the dungeon where Daenerys kept her dragons. Today you can walk through the same halls where Tyrion descended to meet the chained beasts. Accessible on foot in Split.
Klis Fortress
This dramatic clifftop fortress above Split portrayed the city of Meereen, where Daenerys crucified the slave masters. The views alone are worth the visit. Accessible by car/tour from Split.
The Quarry (Žrnovnica)
Located near Split, this quarry was transformed into the fighting pits of Meereen. While not a typical tourist attraction, fans can arrange visits.
Accessible by Boat: Dubrovnik & Beyond
Dubrovnik (2.5 hours by car)
The majority of King's Landing scenes were filmed in Dubrovnik, including:
- The walk of shame (Jesuit Stairs)
- The Red Keep exteriors (Fort Lovrijenac)
- Blackwater Bay (the harbor)
Sibenik (1 hour north)
St. James Cathedral and the narrow streets doubled as Braavos, where Arya trained with the Faceless Men.
Island Connections
While the islands around Split weren't directly used for filming, sailing along the coast gives you a sense of why Croatia was chosen - the dramatic landscapes, crystal waters, and ancient architecture perfectly captured the Game of Thrones aesthetic.
Game of Thrones Boat Tours
Some tour operators offer Game of Thrones-themed excursions. While we focus on natural beauty rather than TV locations, we can certainly include Klis Fortress views on coastal tours and share the local connection to the show.
Tips for Fans
- The Palace basements are busiest midday - go early or late
- Klis Fortress has minimal shade - bring water and sun protection
- For full GoT immersion, plan a day trip to Dubrovnik
- Download comparison photos to match TV scenes to real locations
