Croatia's Swimming Waterfalls
Unlike many waterfalls around the world, at Krka National Park you can actually swim at the base of stunning cascades. The Skradinski Buk waterfall, with its 17 stepped travertine barriers, is one of the most beautiful natural swimming holes in Europe.
Important Update: As of recent years, swimming at the main waterfall area is periodically restricted for conservation. Check current regulations before visiting.
Getting to Krka from Split
By Bus/Car:
The park is about 1 hour north of Split. Buses run regularly to Skradin, the gateway town.
By Boat:
The most scenic option is to sail up the coast to Skradin, then take the park boat to the falls. Some tours combine coastal cruising with the Krka visit.
Park Entrances
Krka has multiple entrances:
- Lozovac: Main entrance for Skradinski Buk, with shuttle bus to the falls
- Skradin: Take a scenic 25-minute boat ride to the falls
- Roski Slap: Less crowded upper falls area
What to See
Skradinski Buk
The largest and most famous waterfall, dropping 46 meters over 17 barriers. Wooden walkways wind through the cascades.
Roski Slap
Quieter upper falls with their own beauty and swimming spots.
Visovac Island
A tiny island with a 15th-century Franciscan monastery, accessible by park boat.
Historic Watermills
Traditional stone mills show how the river's power was historically harnessed.
Best Time to Visit
- Early morning: Fewer crowds, cooler temperatures
- Spring (April-May): Highest water levels after winter rain
- September: Warm enough to swim with fewer tourists
What to Bring
- Swimsuit and towel (if swimming is permitted)
- Water shoes (rocky paths and riverbed)
- Sun protection
- Picnic lunch (or eat at park restaurants)
- Cash for entry fees (card sometimes accepted)
Combining with a Boat Trip
A unique way to visit Krka is by boat from Split along the coast to Skradin. After exploring the falls, sail back via a different coastal route. This combines sea adventure with freshwater nature.
