A Living Museum Island
Trogir is often described as a museum town, but unlike a museum, this UNESCO World Heritage site is vibrantly alive. The entire historic center sits on a small island, connected to the mainland and Ciovo Island by bridges, with narrow marble streets, Romanesque churches, and Renaissance palaces around every corner.
Getting to Trogir from Split
- Bus: Bus #37 runs frequently from Split (30-40 minutes, very affordable)
- Taxi/Uber: About 20-25 minutes, convenient for groups
- Boat: Scenic option along the coast, often included in charter itineraries
- Rental car: Easy drive with parking near the old town
Top Things to See
Cathedral of St. Lawrence
The crowning jewel of Trogir, this Romanesque-Gothic cathedral took 400 years to build. The famous Radovan Portal (1240) is considered the finest example of Romanesque sculpture in Croatia. Climb the bell tower for panoramic views.
The Old Town Streets
Simply wandering the narrow marble-paved streets is a joy. Notice how the stone is worn smooth from centuries of footsteps.
Kamerlengo Fortress
This 15th-century fortress at the western tip offers great views and hosts summer concerts. Walk along the sea walls at sunset.
St. John's Gate and Loggia
The beautiful carved reliefs and the Renaissance loggia are perfect examples of the town's architectural heritage.
Where to Eat
Trogir has excellent restaurants with less tourist markup than Split:
- Konoba TRS: Creative Dalmatian cuisine in a beautiful setting
- Restaurant Alka: Fresh seafood on the waterfront
- Pizzeria Mirkec: Casual, great pizzas, local favorite
Combining Trogir with a Boat Trip
Trogir makes an excellent start or end point for boat excursions. Its position at the entrance to a sheltered channel offers calm waters and beautiful coastal scenery. Many of our private charters can include Trogir in the itinerary.
How Long to Spend
Half a day is enough to see the main sights and enjoy lunch. If you want to fully explore and relax, a full day allows for a more leisurely pace with time to swim off Ciovo Island nearby.
